In some cases, adhesive oozing during printing and die-cutting doesn’t mean poor label materials, but a wrong choice of label material adhesive. Label adhesives have different performance during converting and applications.

Self-adhesive Label Material Hot Melt Adhesive

Hot melt adhesive features high initial tack and low cost. However, it has weak cohesion. Slightly higher coating weight will easily lead to adhesive bleeding during printing and die-cutting. The issue becomes extremely obvious for freezer-grade hot melt label materials or standard hot melt label stocks with increased glue coating weight in winter.

Solutions to reduce oozing: switch to water-based acrylic adhesive or firmer freezer hot melt adhesive; control storage temperature & humidity of label materials; adopt sharp die-cut blades and so on.

Besides, self-adhesive hot melt label materials performs poorly under high temperature,it tends to lift or fall off when applied outdoors. Oil-based adhesive is a better alternative for outdoor scenarios.

Water-based Adhesive

Water-based adhesive has good cohesion, which greatly minimizes adhesive oozing during printing and die-cutting.Its adhesion achieves maximum adhesion after 24 hours of application.

It also delivers better heat resistance than hot melt. In the Middle East, indoor temperatures soar in summer(normally above 40℃), frequently causing hot melt labels to lift, while water-based acrylic adhesive labels maintain stable adhesion. Most European clients choose water-based acrylic adhesive label stocks.
